FACTS, FIGURES & HISTORY OF DISTRICT SHOPIAN
Located in the south and south-west extremity of kashmir valley,Shopian is lying in the close proximity of PIR PANJAL mountain range.Bounded by District Kulgam on its East and District Budgam on its North-West and District Pulwama in North and Districts of Rajori & Poonch in its South & South-west respectively.
Shopian is situated at a distance of 51 kms from Srinagar & 20 kms from Pulwama.The currently under construction MUGHAL ROAD now connects District Shopian with Districts Of Rajouri & Poonch.
District Shopian derives its name from the town of "SHOPIAN" about which Frederic Drew,while justifying the basis of its nomenclature, states that it the distortion of word "SHAH-PAYAN" meaning Royal Stay.Shopian was having one of the Wazarat Headquarters out of 6 Wazarats of the time in Kashmir from 1872-1892 A.D.
The total population of Sub-Division Shopian was 2,46,041 souls as per 2001 census. 
District Shopian comprises of 231 villages,lone Tehsil and 43 Patwari Halqas with 30,741.6 hectares mostly of hilly nature.
